Police Motor Transport Department
The Motor Transport Section was established in 1948 to cater to the needs of mobility of Maharashtra Police. It was then headed by an officer of the rank of Supdt. of Police, who use to be a technocrat having expertized in the field of automobile engineering. Several Dy.Ss.P and Inspectors (having technical background, assisted him.
Every district unit and batallions of S.R.P.F. has a Motor Transport Section to look after the day to day maintenance of Police vehicles. Major repairs are carried out at three central workshops located at Pune, Aurangabad & Nagpur whereas body-building work is done at Pune.
Mobility plays a vital role in the efficient performance by the State police force. Road worthy & mechanically reliable vehicles are always required for attending to law and order problems, VVIP bandobast & general police working. This important task is efficiently handled by the Motor Transport Organization.
Motor Transport Organization expanded very rapidly during the eighties. MT Sections of almost all district units and S.R.P.F. batallions are presently headed by officers holding the rank of police inspector. Since 1994, this organization is being headed by an officer of the rank of D.I.G.P./ I.G.P. who, with the assistance of a Superintendent of Police, MT at Pune and a DCP, MT at Mumbai looks after the administration of the State M.T. Organization. The Central Store Purchase Branch, located at Pune purchases spares, tyres, tubes, batteries and other miscellaneous items in bulk on rate contract/tenders & caters to the requirments of various units (except Mumbai). Presently, the State Police has 7871 vehicles, 5 speed boats and 6 other boats. A full-fledged training centre at Pune provides training to officers, technicians and drivers. This training centre is equipped with modern gadgates like driving simulator for grater efficiency and better performance.
